Lived in
It's been a month, and the library is beginning the long evolution into that lived-in look. A nick here, a scratch there, some dirt on the carpet... but it's still beautiful

Finishing touches
Construction crews worked to put the finishing touches on the renovated Barco Law Library all weekend and Monday and Tuesday. The paneling was completed, all the electrical work was done, lettering was put up on the walls, the reference books were moved into the new reference desk, everything was dusted and polished. Our hardworking Information Technology staff began installing all the computers. We wanted everything to look beautiful when the law school officially opened for classes today!

TGIF!
Barco is as busy as a beehive today, with construction workers and library staff bustling around on every floor. The circulation/reference desk has been completed with beautiful polished granite countertops, and a large torchiere is about to be mounted in the center of the circulation area to provide uplighting. The gorgeous wooden bookcases for the reserve collection are in place behind the desk. New chairs are awaiting placement at the public computer terminals. The books are being shifted into their new places in the stacks.
It's all very exciting!

The elevator lobby
There's been lots of work going on in the elevator lobby during the past few days. A beautiful tile floor was installed, and then covered for protection while the walls are being worked on. An electrician came and moved the elevator buttons and the arrows over the tops of the elevator doors out from the old wall so that they will be flush with the new wall. Now paneling is being installed on all the walls, it's just gorgeous, but involved almost constant use of an electric saw. Meanwhile, the busts of Yolanda and George Barco have been mounted in the alcove custom built for them opposite the elevators.
Meanwhile in the main part of the fourth floor a new circulation and reference desk is being assembled. The desk is circular and sits under the dome. Much excitement!

ch ch ch ch...
Changes. There've been lots of changes today - all for the better!
One of the events of this afternoon was the arrival of the ch ch ch chairs for the library.
The new wall to the Student Commons
The new water fountain outside the women's room
New home for the Barco busts, across from the elevators
The new chairs on the fifth floor, waiting to be unwrapped.

Time Capsule
The Barco librarians and staff are also very busy with the renovation this week. We're wearing work clothes all week because there's a lot of physical work to be done. All the stacks that were wrapped in plastic during the summer have to be unwrapped, and then the books need to be dusted and moved to their new permanent locations in the stacks.
One of the librarians put together a time capsule which was "buried" on August 16, 2004 as the final walls were completed for the renovation. Enclosed in the capsule are items that represent this particular library and law school, law librarianship at the beginning of the twenty-first century, and the personalities of the particular librarians and staff employed here, along with written descriptions of the items and what they mean to us.
TIME CAPSULE CONTENTS:
1. Pennsylvania Senate proclamation made upon the death of our named benefactor, Yolanda Barco.
2. A pen typical of the type given to students and librarians by our Westlaw representative.
3. A compact disc from CALI - Computer Assisted Legal Instruction
4. A pocket calendar given to one of the librarians by the Law Library Microform Consortium
5. A guide to some of the nearby restaurants compiled by the library for guests of the law school.
6. Covers from several new books purchased by the library.
7. The renovation timeline
8. A story written by one of our librarians for our holiday party.
9. A book entitled "Legal Research Exercises" sent by the West publishing group to every academic law librarian in the country in hopes that we will use it as a textbook in our classes
10. Copies of "The Weekly BLUR" (Barco Library Under Renovation)
11. A copy of the BLUR Web page which we mounted for this Summer of renovation.
12. Some official university communications received five years ago when there was fear that the computers wouldn’t function properly at the turn of the millenium.
13. A librarian’s pay stub.
14. The campus news publications.
15. A framed cartoon that was published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
16. Gaylord Library Supply Catalog. Placed in one page of this catalog is a piece of tattletape.
17. A sign from the end of a bookcase "Please Reshelve These Books".
18. The staff phone list.
We wonder when the time capsule will be discovered - and what the law library will be like then.

A whirl of activity
It's difficult to keep up with all the action around Barco! There's a small army of workers today, and they're working everywhere in the library it seems. On the fifth floor the cyberbar is rapidly nearing completion, and the carrels and tables are almost all installed. On the fourth floor bookcases are being assembled, and lots of work is being done in the elevator lobby. The microfiche cabinets have been moved from their summer home in one of the computer labs to the new microfiche room. Doors and interior windows are being installed. It looks great!
